Gain an appreciation for the complex nature of underwater life with the Coral Reef Conservation Specialty!
Divers and non-divers of all ages can earn this PADI AWARE certification. All you need is an interest in the ocean.
When we scuba dive or snorkel, we immerse ourselves in a lively underwater world. Colorful reefs flourish with marine life that we enjoy and admire.
Schools of grunt blanket the reef, moving in unison as we drift overhead. Cleaner shrimp dance in anemones and bounce through the gills of fish, scrubbing them of parasites. Lobsters and crabs take cover beneath barrel sponges, their antennae or claws the only things visible.
Without a certain animal not mentioned above, none of this brilliant life would be possible. Any guesses on what it could be?
CORAL REEF CONSERVATION SPECIALTY
If you guessed coral, you are right! You might be surprised to learn coral is in fact an animal, not a plant or rock.
That’s right, coral is comprised of thousands of tiny organisms called polyps. Through their circle of life, polyps become the foundation for the beautiful coral reefs we’re able to drift over.
With the Coral Reef Conservation Specialty, learn more about coral and what makes it so important and special.
One of the many great things about this specialty is you do not need to be a scuba diver to sign up. There are no age requirements or diving certifications required! All you need is a curiosity to soak up information about marine life.
