There are only a few places in the world that offer blackwater drift diving. Here in Palm Beach County, we are lucky enough to be one of them.
Blackwater diving is an exhilarating and unique experience. Although, it can be an intimidating one. Diving in the seemingly bottomless open ocean could make any diver think twice.
Taking the Blackwater Drift Diver Specialty can give you the extra boost of courage to giant-stride in.
WHAT IS BLACKWATER DRIFT DIVING?
Drift through oceanic outer space. Encounter aliens of the abyss. Every night, a diurnal migration of surreal wildlife occurs.
Planktonic and larval-stage creatures are attracted from the depths by moonlight. They travel from cold, deep, offshore waters to the warmer shallows for food. Divers drift in the Gulf Stream with powerful lights. At a depth between 20 to 40 feet, they witness a migration that is out of this world.
WHAT DO YOU SEE ON A BLACKWATER DIVE?
Shine your light on the unimaginable. During a blackwater dive, you’re sure to find something you’ve never seen before. Tiny octopuses and small seahorses curl around drifting pieces of seaweed. Bioluminescent marine life shine like stars in the pitch black underwater “sky.” Larval-stage jellies, squid, and fish are intriguing to admire.
You never know what you will find on a blackwater dive. The endless possibilities are what make these dives so special.
