Where do baby corals come from? While there are no sea birds bringing these bundles of joy, sometimes it is a scientist doing the honors. Join us for a Night at the Reef Institute. Explore the facility where they grow corals, and learn about their upcoming projects!

Enjoy snacks and drinks during an evening of Corals. Find out about the Reef Institute’s latest efforts and initiatives. Take a tour through the coral tanks where juvenile corals grow and develop. During the tour, learn how the healthy corals are raised and prepped for outplanting. And, find out how you can get involved!

THE REEF INSTITUTE

The Reef Institute is dedicated to coral conservation through education, research, and restoration. Their work involves biobanking corals- a fancy term for storing live corals. They then use these corals for propagation, to create new baby corals. Finally, they settle and outplant these corals. We team up with the Reef Institute regularly to support their outplanting efforts once the little corals are ready to be on their own in the ocean. Then, we return to the outplanting sites to record the growth of these corals.

You may also recognise the Reef Institute from their education efforts. They’re active at outreach events, teach people from far and wide through their mobile coral labs and virtual tours, and they frequent Peanut Island for science excursions. Or, maybe you recognise their name from the donation dropdown on each Pura Vida Divers Charter. When you dive with us, we donate a portion of our proceeds to our local non-profits, and let you choose where that donation goes. The Reef Institute is one of our most popular choices.

DIVE WITH A CORAL EXPERT

Grab your gear, jump on the boat, and go diving with a coral expert! Save your spot to dip beneath the surface with the Reef Institute. Find out more about the corals we see on every dive. Learn about corals from people who study them every day. Here in Florida, corals account for the huge amount of biodiversity. Find out what makes them so instrumental. Ask the experts your questions and learn about the corals that make up our reefs.

PADI CORAL REEF ECOLOGY SPECIALTY

Interested in learning more about the local impact coral reefs have? Sign up for the PADI Coral Reef Ecology Specialty course, offered only at Pura Vida Divers.

In the classroom session, you’ll learn how to identify common local corals and the impact corals have on marine life. Discuss the different types of relationships between species on coral reefs, and find out how coral reefs are formed.

Afterwards, explore our local reefs over 4 boat dives. Find examples of interspecies relationships, and confidently identify various types of corals.

RSVP to save your spot in the free Social Night event. Questions about the upcoming Dive with a Coral Scientist or the PADI Coral Reef Ecology Specialty? Contact us at 561-840-8750 or email reservations@puravidadivers.com.
